This course explores the concept of sustainability in relation to its early origins and evolution and how societies have interacted with the environment over time as well as an investigation of some of the fundamental ideas and tools related to environmental, economic and social sustainability. Topics include: early sources of sustainability, the industrial revolution, progress, the environmental movement, environmental economics, measurement and sustainability indicators, energy and transportation, international environmental agreements, unsustainable levels of consumption and waste, sustainable development and global environmental issues, international financial institutions and NGOs, tools for sustainability, the role of civil society and the future of our environment and economies.
