This course introduces students to both the field of public history and the application of history and historical methods in a variety of workplace settings. Public history, which involves the practice and presentation of history outside the academic setting, is the domain of a wide variety of practitioners. While the course deals primarily with the North American context, it also addresses questions of ethics, standards, and audience of broader interest to students of history. Seminar/field work: Three hours a week and eight hours per week of unpaid field work in a public history workplace setting, supervised by a qualified professional acting as a mentor.
