This course covers the history of genocide as both a type of historical event and as a concept which has shaped international policy-making and legal practice. Topics include the Holocaust, the Ukrainian Holomodor, the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, the "Killing Fields" of Cambodia, the Armenian and Rwandan atrocities, and the life and career of Raphael Lemkin, who coined and defined the term. The course seeks to answer the question: what is genocide and how does it differ from ordinary cruelty towards other human beings? Three credit hours.
