This course investigates how men and women sought to understand, explain, control and manipulate the natural world in the early modern period. Topics include medieval cosmology and astrology; alchemy and learned magic; changing views of the role of the devil in the natural world; witch belief and witch hunting. Particular attention is paid to how the traditions of learned magic informed the development of science in the seventeenth century. Three semester hours of credit.
