What, exactly, is a history conference? What role does community, networking, and knowledge-sharing play in the historical profession? What, beyond publishing and teaching, does it mean to be an historian? This course leverages the opportunity UPEI’s hosting of the meetings of the Canadian Historical Association, Atlantic Canada Studies, and the Canadian Catholic History Association (June 1-5, 2026) to explore the inner workings of academic history making. Students will audit the planning of the conference; meet with course directors to gain a granular appreciation of what conferences are effectively for; and take a participatory role in assisting with the conference execution and attending panels and talks.
