This course explores the theoretical foundations for teaching English as a second/additional language (ESL/EAL). Students are introduced to fundamental aspects of additional language acquisition and the factors affecting language learning and teaching. The course introduces the needs of English language learners in various contexts including ESL/EAL, mainstream and foreign language classrooms. This course is an exciting engagement with pressing political debates and ethical issues that ask one to consider the construction of `race,' the workings of racism, and our collective humanity. We will discuss transnational issues regarding `race' and racism that are topical and relate to important political debates regarding migration and citizenship, policing, gentrification, gender, societal alienation, mental health, and legal rights. The class will engage with a wide range of theoretical perspectives regarding `race' and racism such as: Neo-Marxism, Psychoanalysis, Intersectional Feminism, Postcolonialism, and Post-structuralism. Students will develop an understanding of key debates regarding truth and power in academic fields of writing, in the discipline of Sociology, such as critical `race' theory, postcolonialism, intersectional feminist and queer theory, and Neo-Marxism writings regarding `race' and class antagonism. This course is an introduction to differential and integral calculus of functions of a single variable. The course is intended primarily for majors in the Mathematical and Computational Sciences, Engineering and the Physical Sciences, as well as those planning to continue with further Mathematics courses. The concepts of limits, continuity and derivatives are introduced and explored numerically, graphically and analytically. The tools of differential calculus are applied to problems in: related rates; velocity and acceleration; extrema of functions; optimization; curve sketching; and indeterminate forms. The concepts of definite and indefinite integrals are introduced, and the relation between the two integrals is discovered via the Fundamental Theorem of Calculus. This course covers the history of genocide as both a type of historical event and as a concept which has shaped international policy-making and legal practice. Topics include the Holocaust, the Ukrainian Holomodor, the Yugoslav wars of the 1990s, the "Killing Fields" of Cambodia, the Armenian and Rwandan atrocities, and the life and career of Raphael Lemkin, who coined and defined the term. The course seeks to answer the question: what is genocide and how does it differ from ordinary cruelty towards other human beings? Three credit hours. Restriction: Student must have second year standing or above OR have permission of the instructor.
