Your goal is to learn how to argue effectively. We will study formal logic, causal reasoning, analogical arguments, informal fallacies, problems with language, and elementary principles of scientific method. Our goal is to help sharpen reasoning skills used in everyday life. We want to think more clearly, critically, and competently: in short, to distinguish good arguments from bad arguments. To avoid the snares of dogma, we need to ask two questions: What does it mean? and Why ought we to believe it? The second question has two components: the truth or acceptability of the premises and the logic or grounds of the argument. Lectures, discussion, class exercises. Three hours a week. 08-01-2024-24-04-2024 Lecture Monday, Wednesday, Friday 09:30AM - 10:20AM, SDU Main Bldg, Room 432
