This course will serve as an introductory survey to Indigenous literature on Turtle Island (what is now Canada, the US and Mexico). The work we study will span the period often called the Native Literary Renaissance, and the years immediately preceding this, from 1954 onwards. 2024W IKERAS Foundations (IKE-2000-01)

This course is based on the foundations that led to the creation of the IKERAS Faculty. The formation of the Faculty of Indigenous Knowledge, Education, Research and Applied Studies (IKERAS) is grounded in three prime documents; the 2015 Truth and Reconciliation Commissions (TRC) 94 Calls to action, the 2019 231 Calls to Justice by the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls (MMIWG) and the 2018 United Nations Declaration on the Rights of Indigenous Peoples (UNDRIP). Contemporary understandings and practices will be overlaid on traditional understandings of physical, mental, emotional, and spiritual health and wellbeing to identify and foster holistic Indigenous health and well-being. This course will also allow the student to become conversant with the ways in which both historic and contemporary issues have impacted Indigenous people’s health, and how these issues are being addressed in present-day Mi’kma’ki, particularly PEI.

This course introduces Indigenous ways of knowing through active participation. This course introduces students to an understanding of traditional ceremonies, worldview, creation stories and other narrative forms of knowing. By taking part in basic ceremonies and related practices, students will obtain knowledge of how Mi'kmaq people connect to each other, the land, other creatures and the world. 2024W Innovation & ENTR in Science (SCIE-3010-01)

This course provides an overview on how to start and sustain a science-oriented company, with an emphasis on entrepreneurship and innovation in biotechnology. Topics will include specific innovation cases, intellectual property and regulatory hurdles in science including biotechnology, business feasibility studies, financial planning, sources of capital, business structure, marketing, operational and human resource management. Students will be expected to identify and develop an idea which has the potential to be commercialized. The output of this research will be developed into a business idea to be aimed at potential investors, and participation in pitch competitions including the Panther Pitch will be encouraged. 2024W Inorganic Chemistry I (CHEM-2720-01)

This course introduces transition metals and their coordination compounds. Topics include: isomerism, stereochemistry, crystal field theory and HSAB theory. The course also examines specific reactions such as ligand substitution, oxidative addition, reductive elimination, and insertion reactions. Other topics include: symmetry, point groups, symmetry in spectroscopy, as well as an introduction to bioinorganic chemistry.
